Had been used by VFA-303 while with the USN.  Purchased by CF in 1989, for use as spares in repair of CF-188A 199719 (which see).  Remainder of airframe to Bombardier, used for structural testing 1995 to 1996.  Back to CF, used for further spares.  Later used for battle field repairs, marked ABDR 8 RAAC.  This may be the source of the F-18 hulk reported at Borden in 2011.

Pattern aircraft for Canadair production of Sabres, and first trials with Orenda engine.  At Avro Canada at Malton in spring of 1953, for trial fits of Orenda engine.  Unofficial designation of F-86AO used for these trials.  Ferried back to USAF at Mobile, Alabama from Malton on 11 February 1954, via Wright-Patterson and Nashville.  Also reported as an F-86J, dates not known.

first date: 5 March 1956 - Received from USAF

 

Used to flight test Orenda Iroquois engine, after being modified by Canadair.  Canadair project number was CL-52.  Later coded X059.  Delivered to Malton in April 1957, without Iroquois engine.  First flight with Iroquois installed at 12:05 on 13 November 1957, varying reports on whether or not engine was operated on this flight.  Pilot was Orenda Chief Test Pilot Mike Cooper-Slipper.  Iroquois engine operated for over 125 hours, at altitudes up to 40,500 feet.  All flights flown by civilian crews from Orenda and Avro Canada.  Several in flight shut downs, including one explosion of hot section.  Test program halted when Arrow program was cancelled on 20 February 1959.  Reported by Baugher as returned to USAF in August 1959, and scrapped shortly after.
